While delivering a speech in Worcester, Western Cape, in 1997, anti-apartheid activist, political leader, and philanthropist Nelson Mandela shared what has since become a famous quote: “The true character of a society is revealed in how it treats its children.” During this address, he highlighted his fondness for children, saying that the youth are the future leaders of the country and their welfare should be one of South Africa’s highest priorities.

  • Promoting social cohesion

The term “Rainbow Nation” is often used to describe post-apartheid South Africa. It was popularised by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and often referenced by  Mandela to showcase that South Africa is home to a rich tapestry of cultures, languages and ethnicities and to encourage people to live together in harmony. At Zip Zap, we bring together children and youth from diverse backgrounds. While they may be different by virtue of their race, history, or socioeconomic status, when they come together to train and perform, they are all equals. Watch them on stage this month and see first-hand what trust and teamwork can achieve.

  • Creating opportunities for youth

Mandela often spoke about education as a tool for empowerment. In fact, Nelson Mandela famously said, “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” Zip Zap’s nine free youth and outreach programmes provide a safe and supportive environment where 3000 children each year can build self-confidence and learn important life skills like discipline, commitment, and resilience. Our performances also inspire audiences by sharing stories of hope, transformation, and human potential and really embody what young people can do when they are given a chance to shine.

  • Developing future role models

As we often say, once you join the Zip Zap family, you are part of this family for a lifetime. Many former Zip Zap students have become artists, teachers, and leaders who give back to us and to their communities. In this way, the work we do has a ripple effect, which aligns with Mandela’s vision of empowered individuals becoming agents of change in broader society.

As we commemorate Mandela Day on July 18, help us to continue honouring Mandela’s legacy through our commitment to social upliftment and youth empowerment.
