Mandela Day, celebrated on 18 July, marks the birth of Nelson Mandela, a global symbol of peace, justice, and reconciliation. This day is dedicated to inspiring individuals to take action and help change the world for the better, emulating Mandela’s 67 years of fighting for human rights and the abolition of apartheid. For Zip Zap Circus, a non-profit organisation founded in 1992 in Cape Town, Mandela Day holds profound significance.

Zip Zap Circus was established with a vision to unite children from diverse backgrounds and help build a Rainbow Nation, reflecting Mandela’s dream of a harmonious, multicultural South Africa. Zip Zap uses circus as a performance art to bridge social divides, foster inclusivity, and cultivate a sense of community among its participants. Through circus arts, children learn teamwork, discipline, and creativity, with no racial nor economic barriers.

Mandela Day is a reminder of Zip Zap’s mission to promote social cohesion and empower the youth. Through its 9 outreach and youth programmes, over 3000 children are impacted each year. These programmes are offered free to all children and are funded by a combination of fundraising events, public performances and grant and donation from individuals, foundations and corporates.

This year, Zip Zap will be sharing the Zip Zap spirit, bringing joy and laughter to children at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital.

Mandela’s legacy of resilience, compassion, and unity continues to inspire Zip Zap Circus to build a brighter, more inclusive future for all South Africans.
